Guess that’s going to have to wait for another time.

What’s with Europe and the difference between two countries’ flags being vertical versus horizontal orientation.
![]() 04/21/2020 at 15:20 |

It’s so you can turn the flag sideways when you want to change your nationality.

Red is in the middle on the German flag.

I feel like I’m looking at a reminder about “Coral Snake vs Scarlet King Snake”
If red touches black, you’re smoking crack. Wait, if red touches yellow, Bonjour could mean hello. Dammit!

It’s like, which three colours going what way is your flag? Oh, yours is the one with the maple leaf? I know exactly which one that is!

i vote for replacing the stripes with the football flag

To make things even more fun, our very first flag had horizontal bands:
To make it easier (but not really) , we use yellow while the Germans use gold.

We do that too, for the state ensigns.

You’re missing out on some of the best weather and emptiest streets we’ve had in while. Some good and some bad I guess.
What would’ve brought you here ?

It’ll be worth t he wait. Belgium is a good time. Enjoy the beer, chocolate, waffles (Brussels and Leige ) and frites once you get to go. We hit up the Netherlands on that trip, too. Highly recommend . Our flights for Iceland/Norway just got cancelled, so I know how you feel...

Did you know the vertical stripes in the French flag weren’t originally equal?
It wa s 30%, 33% and then 37% (the French naval ensign still is), but Napoleon changed the national flag to be equal in colours.
Sorry, I always found that interesting.
And that the colours were inspired by the Netherlands flag.

Our states actually have their own flags too. Texas even designed there’s specifically so that everyone would confuse them with Chile .
And in fact the state motto “nobody messes with Texas” was stolen from them too. The original phrase, before even Chile got ahold of it was “nobody messes with longcat” which obviously morphed into “nobody messes with Chile” which then became the more famous “nobody messes with Texas”

My girlfriend’s sister lives over in Brussels with her husband so we were going to be staying with them. Hadn’t made plans on what we were going to do as it got canceled before we could get to that stage. Flights had been purchased, it was just planning ceased in early March.

Hmmm Georgia’s flag used to be almost exactly like the unofficial Confederate battle flag but then they changed it to look exactly like the official Confederate States of America flag that no one recognizes. So it’s good as long as no one learns their history. I guess.

Tough. I was supposed to go on a cross country road trip two weeks ago which would mark my second time ever traveling a significant distance that wasn't to Florida. You'll go again eventually.

We’re talking about October now, so we’ll see. Belgium wasn’t at the top of my list, but my girlfriend was planning to visit her sister and I was gonna tag along.

Still sounds like fun. I in all seriousness have never been west of approximately the Florida Panhandle (crowd gasps) so I really want to go west, like at all. Or even anywhere; I'm not picky. Ever been to Europe before?

You should see Alabama. It's really a serious problem though and it sort of disguises itself in false exaggerated patriotism like a TV redneck.

I’ve been before, this would be my third trip over to Europe, fourth if you count 12 hours in the Moscow airport as visiting Europe, which I don’t.

It’s a shame it got cancelled, but better to wait for safer times indeed. When you do get here, be sure to visit Autoworld! The museum of natural history (KBIN) comes heartily recommended as well, beautiful building and they’ve got one of the best dinosaur collections in the world, if that’s your thing.
If you ever need any other tips (stuff away from the tourist traps , driving roads, ...), feel free to hit me up!

If It’s Tuesday, This Mustn’t be Belgium
I already missed out on my annual Vancouver Auto Show trip, was thinking of going to the Memorial Cup this year - done now too.
I still want to be out of the country during the election, just for laughs, maybe that can happen.

Which, i’d assume is the greatest sport played with jellybeans ever invented.

Shitty for sure, especially when not being able to spend time with family is involved. I’m starting to feel really bummed out about how long “this” will last...and even as things get better, how much longer we won’t be able to travel freely.
We have a 2 year old that we’ve been aching to start travelling with - basically the last 3 years we haven’t really gone anywhere. On top of that we have my wife’s parents on the other side of the country, and my parents on the other side of the world. We may get to be able to travel to see those on the east coast sometime this year, maybe...but those across the world - especially with these travel restrictions, and potential regional outbreaks/continuations, things start feeling really dire.
Shitty enough that my parents haven’t seen my kid in a year...it might be another year or more, and none of us are getting any younger. Maybe they’ll see her again by the time she’s 5? Maybe?!
Hope your sister and family are doing OK in Belgium - at least so thankful to have video calling capabilities and whatnot these days to stay “close” to family.

It’d be my girlfriend’s family, but thanks!
